Exploring Theology Dialogues

Meanings and values do not come down from above. They come up from below i.e. we have to create them. Theology discussion notes 11/25/03
Discussed point 1 on the source of meaning. We agreed that meaning does not come down from above. John Blass had interesting question about "creating" values. Do we literally create values or do we discover them in the universe around us. We need to look at this a bit more. Discovery would mean that the values are present in the universe and the values we create may or may not match this already existent reality. The problem I would have with such an embedded set of values is that they would leave no room for change. If we hit them in our explorations then that's it for all time. I don't think that any morality can be built on principles that are eternal and unalterable. Uncertainty and change must always be accepted as a given in our universe. - Ray Peckauskas
